The Trio di Trieste play Brahms' Third Piano Trio
XR-remastered for finest sound quality
The 78rpm discs used for this transfer were typical of most British HMV records, with their characteristic 'bacon frying' crackle. However, they come at the end of the era of direct-to-disc recording - tape was introduced the following year - and at a time when EMI's engineers had managed to successfully extend the frequency range of their recordings by a considerable degree.
Despite having to battle with quite a degree of background noise, as well as quite a lot of swish, the results obtained here have proved very satisfactory. A small chamber music group such as this can be exceptionally unforgiving in an audio restoration, and I've aimed to preserve every nuance of playing possible whilst minimising noise. The sample here, of the final movement, is perhaps the most successful section of the recording from a remastering point of view as there was considerable variation across the discs. Throughout the recording, the use of XR remastering has ensured a full and vivid rendition of this excellent performance.
