This is a superb Aïda with a truly excellent cast, recorded live at the Metropolitan Opera in 1953 and expertly XR-remastered for Pristine by Andrew Rose.
Zinka Milanov took the lead role whilst at the height of her powers. It's a role she was experienced in - indeed no fewer than seven broadcasts over the seasons captured her singing Aïda. Singing the part of Radamès was Mario Del Monaco, heard here in only his second broadcast from the Met. He's in excellent voice and suits the part perfectly.
The recording also showcases the Met broadcast debut of George London, who would go on to become a leading Wagnerian baritone. Fausto Cleva was excellent at the podium. Sound quality is superb for its day throughout, the performance truly fabulous.
