WALTER Mahler Symphony No. 1

This week's release features Bruno Walter's 1954 mono recording of Mahler's First Symphony with the New York Philharmonic, captured at Carnegie Hall.  This performance predates Walter's more famous 1961 stereo recording with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra, which benefited from advancements in recording technology.  It offers a unique perspective on Walter's interpretation of the work, showcasing his conducting of a seasoned, established orchestra in their familiar concert environment.  Walter's connection to Mahler is notable, as the two worked and studied together extensively.

While the 1961 recording is often cited as definitive, some argue that the 1954 performance is superior.  This new release, remastered using Pristine's Ambient Stereo XR technology, brings this earlier recording to modern listeners with improved sonic clarity. The single-day recording captures the energy of a near-live performance and offers a valuable historical document of Walter's interpretation of Mahler's First Symphony.

We also celebrate Schubert's birthday with a special 10% discount on all 78 albums of his music at Pristine this week.
