This week we head to Milan and the Teatra alla Scala for Maria Callas's 1959 recording of Ponchielli's La Gioconda, made in stereo for EMI/Columbia, and XR remastered to glorious effect in this new release.
Exceptionally well-received at the time of release: "The sound is excellent—bells, distant voices, ironical off-stage revelry are beautifully calculated. But it is as a portrait of Mme Callas’s voice and a souvenir of her exceptional dramatic gift that the new set will most commend itself" (The Gramophone), this remastering builds on the superb work put in some 65 years ago to produce something truly magnificent.
We also celebrate Mozart's 268th birthday - there's a discount of 10% on all our recordings of his music, which gives you no less than 115 albums to choose from!
