This week’s release celebrates the one hundredth anniversary of the birth of Giuseppe Di Stefano (1921 –2008), certainly on any opera lover’s short list of the greatest tenors of the twentieth century. It fills an odd gap in his discography in that all but one of his complete studio opera sets is now available in “official” transfers - except for his 1959 stereo remake of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, with Renata Scotto as Lucia, at La Scala under Nino Sanzogno.
The sound of the original recording, though made by the legendary Mercury team, has previously come under some criticism. Master restoration engineer Mark Obert-Thorn has aimed here to ameliorate many of its original shortcomings. We hope you will agree that it has never sounded better than it does now!
